Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
