The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
